The Opéra Comique is one of the oldest French theatrical and musical institutions. Its history has in turn been boisterous and prestigious until its registration on the list of National Theatres in 2005.
For over three centuries, the Opéra Comique has been creating master pieces of the French operatic repertoire while revealing many young talents: Carmen by George Bizet and Manon by Jules Massenet were both created at the Opéra Comique respectively in 1875 and 1884. Today still, the commission and creation of operas are very much part of the Opéra Comique’s identity, along with the societal impact of its projects.
