Hamlet refuses to attend the coronation of Claudius, who’s marrying his recently widowed mother, the Queen.
In Elsinore, Hamlet Senior seems forgotten, and it’s causing a lot of pain to the your prince removed from the throne. The late King’s apparitions rouse him from his grief and lurch him into a destructive quest for the truth.
From Dumas’ first adaptation, Barbier and Carré made a libretto that is as romantic as it is spectacular, and where Ophelia shines with a singular lustre. With his virtuoso melodies, breathtaking musical ensembles, and brilliant orchestra introducing saxophone to the opera scene, Ambroise Thomas has composed one of the most beautiful scores of the French repertoire.
The Opéra Comique is reviving the 2018 production in which Sabine Devieilhe played the overwhelming role of Ophelia, alongside Stéphane Degout, vibrant embodiment of the tormented prince. Louis Langrée returns to direct its favourite score, which Cyril Teste’ stage direction transforms into a splendid metaphor of the power of theatre.
